Hackney Back Rooms, London, UK


Hackney Back House is a residential development in a London conservation area. The architects were faced with the challenge of building a new family home within a limited back garden site while respecting the local environment. Weathering steel cladding is part of a carefully selected mix of materials in this project, which also includes ochre brickwork and anodised aluminium windows. The weathered steel box-like structure of the house provides a modern contrast to the existing stone walls on the site. The steel cladding not only gives the house a modern and robust appearance, but will weather gracefully over time, creating a layer of rust that will blend better into its surroundings as the years go by.
