Disadvantages of weathering steel
Weathering steel has many advantages, but also some challenges. These challenges may make weathering steel a poor choice for some projects.
Special welding techniques may be required
One major challenge has to do with welding points. Special welding techniques may be required if you want the solder joints to weathering at the same rate as other structural materials.
Incomplete rust resistance
Although weathering steel is resistant to corrosion, it is not 100% rust-proof. If water is allowed to accumulate in certain areas, these areas will be more vulnerable to corrosion.
Proper drainage can help prevent this problem, but even so, weathering steel is not completely rust-proof. Humid and subtropical climates may not be suitable for weathering steel because steel never dries out and reaches a point of stability.
Rust may contaminate the surrounding area
Part of the appeal of weathering steel is its weathered appearance, but it is important to note that rust can stain the surrounding area. Dyeing is most prominent in the early years when steel forms a protective coating.
Weathering steel may take a considerable time to develop its protective sheen (6-10 years in some cases), while the initial flash rust contaminates other surfaces. It is important to keep this in mind when developing projects to avoid unsightly staining in the wrong places.
Many suppliers do offer weathering steel that has undergone a pre-weathering process to eliminate this awkward phase and reduce the amount of bleeding that typically occurs within the first six months to two years.
Weathering steel can change the look of the structure while minimizing maintenance costs. But before choosing this material for a project, it is important to understand the advantages, disadvantages and behavior of weathering steel. Although you will never find Cor-Ten steel again, you can find weathering steel in the specifications listed above. If the supplier claims to offer COR-Ten steel, they do not understand the product they offer. Look for suppliers who can explain which type of weathering steel is best for your project and goals.
