Corten steel is a structural steel with excellent weather resistance. Its chemical composition leads to the formation of an oxide layer on its surface. This orange layer keeps updating until it reaches a stable stage. This layer, the patina, protects the base material from deterioration and does not alter the mechanical properties of the steel. Corten steel is not traditional oxidized steel. Although they may look similar at one stage, they are quite different, especially when it comes to their lifespan. Corten steel is nearly 4 to 8 times more weather resistant than conventional steel.

Corten steel will not oxidize when placed indoors. Although it is primarily a material for exterior use, more and more architects and designers are looking to incorporate corten steel into their interior design projects. For residential projects, the product can be left outdoors to oxidize until you achieve your desired platinum finish. Then place it where you choose. Note that since there is no protection, if the patina is contaminated (a glass of water, wine), it may leave marks.

Excessive moisture should be avoided even with Corten steel as it will damage its surface layer and may cause the steel to peel. Furthermore, the presence of salt destabilizes the material’s protective layer. In both cases, the oxide layer deteriorates repeatedly, causing premature wear of the steel. To address premature degradation in this case, custom designs can be made by adjusting the thickness of the corten steel product, which guarantees a longer service life.

The rate of change and final color of Corten steel depend on the surrounding atmospheric conditions. A sulfur-rich atmosphere speeds up the oxidation process and produces a deeper patina. Frequent cycles of wet and dry conditions accelerate oxidation. To obtain uniform coloring, the surface must be polished before being subjected to atmospheric conditions. For a more industrial finish, simply wash with water. Industrial oxidation takes longer to create.

What makes Corten steel unique is how its exposed surface has changed over the years. It changed from its original dark grey finish to an orange patina in a matter of weeks. Depending on local weather conditions, the patina continues to evolve over the years and reaches a determined dark brown. If you place corten steel planters in your home, you can see this unique transformation.

Alternating wetting and drying and good ventilation can make Corten steel naturally covered with an oxide film and reveal the orange layer. Therefore, if a corten steel pot is placed outside in harsh weather, oxidation will form within a few weeks. The stabilization phase can take months to years, depending on the environment. When the protective layer is damaged, it spontaneously reorganizes and it heals! It will always protect the underlying steel and minimize material loss compared to normal steel.

During the transformation of Corten steel, rust may be deposited on surrounding surfaces such as glass, natural stone, paving stones, aluminum, etc. This is called “bleeding” or “dripping”. These stains can be avoided if the structure is designed so that water does not run off these surfaces, but onto surfaces that are less prone to staining. Scrub these stains regularly with hot water, if necessary. This exudate is primarily stabilized iron oxide and is not harmful to the environment, vegetation or wildlife.
